The nice thing is now that I'm settling into middle age I no longer feel the compulsion to see the damn thing (if it gets made) to let my contempt fester. Mind you, I'll still probably make snide remarks here if I'm around to do so. I only wish I had been able to do the same when the Hugh Jackman version came out.

I never disliked the original, and, as you point out, Hugh Jackman with long hair and leather was, well, fucking hot. The karate midget will only look stupid.

And Ken now is placed perhaps lower than anyone has ever been on the ranking of Streeters. I need David to offer his particular pearl of wisdom about this film once more. I don't always agree with David, but somehow I never place him on my To Be Executed list. I suspect it's the eyebrows.

I'm going to be the contrarian here and suggest that Cruise (whatever one may think of him as a person; and I hereby summarize my own thoughts as: ick) might not be bad in this role. He's old enough that he need not look absurdly boyish. He's capable of good acting with the right screenplay and the right director.

Richard Valley and I were prepared to hate Cruise in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, to the point where I think it was hard for both of us to be objective when we watched the movie. Anne Rice was also prepared to hate him, to the point where she wrote ferocious objections on her blog when she learned of the casting. And yet when the movie fianlly got released, Anne Rice retracted her comments; and watching the movie instead of imagining it forced Richard and me to give it a good review. We gave Cruise a good review in it, too.

I actually liked VAN HELSING much more than I didn't. It had it's problems, but it was a pretty damned enjoyable film.

I hate Cruse so much on so many levels that the last thing I saw was INTERVIEW. No- EYES WIDE SHUT. To get me to watch the little toad, something about the vehicle has to trump my antipathy.

You'd be surprised what we watched.

C'mon Ken, it was a harmless adventure film with no pretense at being anything more. I thought Cruise was effective for the same reason I thought he was effective in the vampire film: at no point did I think of him as the part he usually portrays: Tom Cruise.

COLLATERAL had no pretense to importance? I feel that would astonish Michael Mann -- and the studio that peddled it as Oscar-bait to the extent of sending out copies of the screenplay.

Getting screeners "for your consideration" at year's end for dubious not-a-hope-in-hell titles isn't all that unusual -- LEGALLY BLONDE????? -- but in a presentation box with a glossy making of and the screenplay, that's a serious push.
