"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead" is a 2007 film finally getting a limited release this weekend from Indican Pictures at the Village East Cinemas 12th & 2nd Ave. NY, NY .
For any horror fan who loves his monsters mixed with humor, this is a delightful fun quirky comedy that will have you laughing aloud .
Writer /Director Jordan Galland 's story is of an Off- Off(in many senses of the word) Broadway production which retells HAMLET in it's original form- as a tale of vampires.
Jake Hoffman (son of Dustin ,though he is a talent in his own right) plays Julian Marsh, a loser who lives in his father's doctor's office until Dad( Broadway great Chip Zien ) tells him get a job or get out.
Julian Marsh The job is direct the aforementioned play . His best friend Julian ( Kris Lemche ) is cast as Hamlet ,only to suspect something is rotten in this theatre. John Ventimglia (giving one a good idea what Robert Downey Jr would look like playing one of undead ) is a toothy Theo Horace ,owner of the theatre and a vampire . Devon Aoki is Justin's ex-girl friend who gets cast as Orphelia, and may end up on the snack menu for the troupe . Ralph Macchio is the new boyfriend who may be in the mob . Jeremy Sisto turns up near the end playing a cop (which was shot probably the same time he began working on LAW & ORDER ).
John Ventimglia,Hoffman,Devon AokiThe theatre injokes are many ,the jokes are fun , and horror fans will get some cool death scenes(a more elaborate variant of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer type ) . Anyone who says theatre is dead you can point to this film and say -No, it's undead !
Music is by Sean Lennon .
The NY Times and several other main press media have come down hard on this film (a festival favorite ), but I would recommend this low budget indie film over most of the big budget mindless CGI crazy souless drivel out there .
That's right, this Vampire tale has heart.
