When major studios don't send us screeners of movies that fit right into Scarlet or Van Helsing's Journal, what if we got more aggressive about reviewing some of these movies from our own personal copies? Maybe if the major studios saw articles about rival studios' DVDs, they'd be encouraged to send screeners. I do enjoy reading and writing about indie movies the major newspaper reviewers have ignored. In Scarlet no. 4, for instance, I was delighted to review THE DEVIL'S CHAIR, a little-publicized indie that deserves to be seen. I've searched out and bought DVDs of indies based on positive reviews in Scarlet and VHJ. I'm glad Harry's willing to sift through the shit like MONSTURD in order to send reviewers the occasional indie that looks better. But, right now, distributors are sending us an unbalanced assortment. Along with the MONSTURDS, we're also getting too many movies and books published years ago. In some cases, these aren't even new and improved releases. I just bought and plan to watch tomorrow The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which was made in Sweden, the film of the second book just came out in theaters, i.e, none of which are near Groton, CT. Now that would be a good film to review and publish in Scarlet, not Monsturd.

If they ant a review, they have to send us a copy. And if we hang in there long enough, we'll get them from all the studios. I went through this with my CLASSIC IMAGES CD soundtrack column. That said, the current economic situation does have studios cutting back & that does affect us, too. Universal recently let us know they weren't providing screeners on their classic titles to any mags with a circulation of less than 20,000. That sure ain't us & it ain't most of the fantastica genre mags. The policy strikes me as misguided because that means the publications that most accurately target their audience for the classic horror titles aren't going to get promo copies. But a few of them run huge used book sales annually. No need for the cover of darkness. I can pop the "horrors" into the donation bins. Oddly, what I deem the worst of the worst doesa sell. Reasonable prices -- I go to all those sales and I don't think I've ever escaped without a bagful. But the donation box sits right in front of the circulation desk and I do occasionally hear commentary on what I drop off --! I don't think I've ever dumped a Scarlet screener there, though. I've kept everything I've reviewed so far, partly because Harry's not offering us the worst of the worst. It might come in handy some day to aid in the departure of guests who stay past my bedtime. (Surprisingly there's even a sequel, of sorts, called RETARDEAD!) I was thinking more the bottom of the barrel cheapies that I seem to collect hither and yon. I'm always amazed that someone buys them. But since I was the original idiot , I can hardly talk. While on the subject of reviews, just getting into to the DVD reviews in VHJ. But, as usual they are delightful. They cover releases that are often not mentioned elsewhere. They either point me toward or miles away from a particular and they are often much more fun than the movie being reviewed. When reviews are that entertaining- give 'em the space. You say "Wicked" , like it's a bad thing.

And your sense of humor is a delight as always, Bob, I was just busy wallowing in self-pity that night and lashed out like a spoiled brat. I should, of course, have put my frustration to creative use instead of irritating friends. This is why my online friendships out-number my real world ones and more importantly, why I frequently confuse acquaintances with friends and end up offending others by being overly familiar.
