I'm of two minds as to whether to see this. The film is comprised of footage that was shot for Jackson specifically so he could see what he was doing
wrong, he was purposefully running at half steam to save his voice and energy for the actual concerts and I'm sure he'd have been horrified that this
was going to stand as his last artistic record. And given his relationship with Sony, he'd probably be appalled at how much money this will make for them.
Jackson was an extraordinary artist between Off The Wall and Bad, and I'd rather remember him for that work, than as the grotesque zombified caricature of
himself that he'd become by the end. And the title. I know it was the name of the tour that he's rehearsing for in the film, but this obviously is not
it. It's just the beginning of the posthumous cash-in. Expect endless repackaging of his old records, box sets and documentary series in the months to
come.
On the other hand, it does seem a pretty extraordinary film.

The interesting thing is that it really hasn't made nearly the money Sony expected. You would have thought this was bigger'n Harry Potter and
Twinklight combined to listen to the entertainment reportage on the various news shows. That is scarcely borne out by a national $23 million opening weekend. I
know my personal theater experience is skewed because corporate decided they could get premium prices on this and made it cost more to see it at my theater
than anywhere else, meaning that most people went anywhere else. Even so, we had sell-out after sell-out on the opening weekend of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE,
but never even got close to a sell-out on this.

They're probably happy it's over 113 million worldwide, but they won't get a penny from me!

So that outpouring of grief to rival the Valentino funerals didn't translate into actually shelling out money, huh?
My interest in Jackson has always been fairly minimal, but I'll be giving this a wide berth. What he did to his face over the years is just too damned creepy. It would be like watching Erik sing & dance. |
