I'm new to the board and if this is improper then you have every right to scold me but I just wanted to pass along some info on a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel I'm publishing through the fine folks at Alterna in December. I should mention that I based Edelweiss Lodge on Gillette Castle in Act One of the graphic novel as a tribute to William Gillette. They're both saved in my Youtube favorites. I was thrilled that someone had a recording of Gillette's voice as Holmes. And I should mention your vids were a huge help when I was working on the book. I stopped by That's Entertainment over the weekend and picked up Polly and Hardgraves and the Spaghetti String Murder and was happy to see you'd stuffed an ashcan of the Holmes graphic novel in their copies! You bring a nice sense of humor to your Victorian (well, all right, the 1920's) murders, something I appreciate. I'll have to look you up the next Boston Comicon.

Especially the scene between Holmes and Faulkner near the end of video two. There was a line in it that wasn't in the original play that I really liked. I hope you enjoy both books. I had originally brought the ashcans along when I was doing Free Comic Book Day. Many of them weren't taken, so I decided to stick a few in copies of the Spaghetti Strand Murder.

I was motivated by the Booth Tarkington quote: 'I would rather see you [Gillette] play Sherlock Holmes than be a child again on Christmas morning." Since we can never see him perform the play, I thought synchronizing with photos would be the closest I could come. Here's a bit of history on the Gillette audio that you might find interesting. It was recorded right here in MA in February 1936! Gillette was on tour in Boston for the play "Three Wise Fools" and Harvard Professor Frederick Packard invited Gillette to his home in West Medford, where he convinced Gillette to record those two scenes onto glass disk. Packard played Watson, and his wife Alice (!) played Faulkner. I did enjoy the books. Your sense of absurdism in the Spaghetti Murders is in line with my sense of humor. Are you a fan of Christopher Durang? But I really liked Polly and Handgraves. I've always enjoyed paranormal investigators, and I would never have guessed the Cardboard Box connection!

I suppose the only real connection between them is that they were both based on true crimes. But that story was definitely firmly in my mind when I was writing Polly and Handgraves. Yeah, you don't know how much of a help that was in helping me with Sherlock Holmes. I think it was just putting a voice to Gillette that was so great. And it gave me a little extra dialogue to play around with that wasn't in the original play.

Sadly no recording is known to exist. If you're interested (or anyone else reading this) send me a message.
