SCARLET #3 | ||
|
Kevin, Universal News, that huge magazine store on 23rd St. between 5th Ave. and 6th Ave., carries so many different kinds of movie magazines, but they do not
carry "Scarlet".

That is odd, since UNIVERSAL NEWSSTANDS are one of our biggest buyers - may need to check on them-

After almost 4 months they may simply be sold out. The issue did appear in January ...

We got a very nice write up in the HORROR HAPPENING EXAMINER =-free subscription to that btw-Kevin
http://www.examiner.com/x-9764-Horror-Happenings-Examiner~y2009m6d1-Scarlet--a-classy--classic-monstermystery-movie-magazine Scarlet - a classy & classic monster/mystery movie magazine June 1, 3:24 PM ยท "Scarlet The Film Magazine" is sort of the new kid on the block (and we don't mean "Elm Street"), yet its origins go back to 1991. 18 years ago, Richard Valley began publishing "Scarlet Street." The magazine grew in popularity, influence and international distribution, until Valley's illness led to the magazine ceasing publication in June 2006 (after a whopping 55 issues). Many of the people who were involved in the previous magazine wanted to start a new publication that would pay tribute to their late friend and their love for the mystery/horror genres. Thus, Scarlet The Film Magazine was born. It had its public debut in June of last year at the Monster Bash convention, where the first edition of the new, albeit familiar, magazine quickly became a fast seller. Publisher Kevin Shinnick is passionate about the monsters and mystery movies, and it shows on every page. He is quick to share credit with Associate Publisher Arlene Domkowski, Editor Harry H. Long and Consulting Editor Ken Hanke. The magazine is devoted to a serious examination of the genres while keeping a sense of fun. The first two issues were blessed with articles by Famous Monsters' own Forry J Ackerman. With Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi sharing the cover of the first edition, and Boris back on the cover of the second issue, you know you can't go wrong. The magazine publishes bi-annually, with its sister magazine "Van Helsing Journal" (which concentrates on foreign and silent horror) released annually. The first two issues are now collector's items. Scarlet #3 will have tributes to Forry J Ackerman, Robert (Count Yorga) Quarry, artist Linda Miller and more on classic horror of the 1930s on. It will premiere this month, June 26-28, 2009 at MONSTER BASH in Butler PA. Each new issue retails for $8.95, and is available on limited quantities at newsstands like Universal Newsstands as well as specialty stores and online outlets like Hollywood Book & Posters, Creepy Classics, Horrorbles. Midtown Comics, Scary Monsters, Dream Haven, Oldies.com, Dark Delicacies & more. Overseas they may be ordered at Cinema Store & Hemlock Books (both in England). Alternately, you can also order individual copies directly from: scarletthefilmmag@yahoo.com for those who wish to order with PayPal. The publishers are also accepting three-issue mini-subscriptions as well. To get the subscription starting with the last issue, #2, a check may be paid for issues #2-4 for $25 (U.S., made payable out to "Scarlet The Film Magazine") and sent to Scarlet The Film Magazine, P.O. Box 2092 Cleona, PA. 17042-2092. Or wait until the next issue and subscribe for issues #3-5 for $25. In either case, it's a saving of three dollars over individually bought copies. When subscribing, note which three editions you prefer, #2-4 or #3-5. Outside of continental U.S., please add in necessary postage. Again, sample single issues of issue #2 are $8.95, but please add in proper postage. Scarlet Street was always a favorite of "Dracula Tour" travelers to Transylvania, who often got samples of the magazine in their travel goodie bags. Scarlet has carried on that fine tradition, and will include copies for the vampire vacationers to read on the group's plane flight to Romania on the July 9-16 Summer DracTour. |

Glad to hear that issue no. 3 will come out in time for the Monster Bash. So many magazines have died this year but Scarlet remains proudly undead!

The CD went off to the printer this morning by Express Mail - more on that tomorrow - so I'm hoping we'll be ready for the Bash. I came home
from work and crashed for about 4 or 5 hours.
Tomorrow I'll give a preview of the cover and a little backstory ... I'll also be cooking up a batch of mango-kiwi chutney ... |

I got a chuckle out of that, Harry -- I usually go on some sort of cooking bender after finishing a long slog at the computer. |

Well, I haven't exactly had a lot of time to cook for the past several weeks...
About 3 (4?) weeks ago, after finishing a long Saturday working on SCARLET3, I realized that I hadn't backed up anything on the computer since I moved everything over to it back in February when my laptop went belly-up (bad motherboard). To make a long story short, the backup went disastrously wrong & I deleted everything from My Documents. Not just the issue (which was about 2/3 finished), but everything! Past issues, cheesecake recipes, my freelance writing going back about 10 years ... everything. Fortunately everything pre-dating the laptop crash existed on the laptop's hard-drive (which my tech guru had made into an external hard-drive for me) but issue 33 was gone. Trying to return it from the Recycle Bin simple emptied the Recycle Bin. The tech guru was unable to salvage anything useful (aside from a few pictures) from the hard-drive. So as of about a month ago it's been a mad scramble to recollect everything from saved emails or by contacting writers & asking them to re-send things. I want to thank everyone who acted promptly to get us replacements. I want particularly to thank John Soister, who did an emergency proofreading on reconstructed pages even while he was packing to leave for Egypt, and Dan Gallagher, who whipped up a newe splash page for Lelia's Gramercy article in only a few days when I thought all our backlogged photos were gone (fortunately it turns out they weren't, but we're still using his drawing anyway). I also apologize to the writers who contributed reviews which, because we lost everything - including the assignment sheets - I didn't realize needed to be contacted to get replacements. We had a lovely letters section, too, but those are gone, dammit. It's been a mad dash to reconstruct the issue & some of it doesn't looks as nice as it did first time round, but ... we got it done & it's at the printer. It should be delivered in time for Monster Bash
For all you Michael Wilk fans ... and I know you are legion ... he'll be back with issue 4. We're already discussing what that cover should look like. |

Oh that must have been Hell ! Sorry to hear you had to go through that Harry. That's terrible....just terrible, you must have been fit to be tied.
You'll be ready for a Bash now! I like the cover! First thing it reminded me of was Fritz Lang's "Siegfried".

That's a gorgeous cover and the main article will certainly be of interest to many. GROOVY AGE OF HORROR website tackled this debate recently as well and
there was certainly a mix of food for thought and vitroil as a result. Well done, one and all and I can't wait to read it.

Paul Leggett, who is a Presbyterian minister, wrote the article, which covers the late US silents and the 1930s Golden Age. He'll be following it up with
several more installments.
>>you must have been fit to be tied<< It's been an exhausting and & frantic several weeks. |

As I wrote to Harry privately, I have a hard time deciding whether I love computers or hate them -- until I think about the hours of typing and re-typing
multiple drafts, before word processing. Good job getting the issue completed under such time pressure!
