My first issue of Famous Monsters was number 58, discovered coverless at a Salvation Army store. I was 10, and never knew such a thing existed. After that, finding new editions became an ongoing treasure hunt, because my local drug and grocery stores never carried it. Spotting an issue on a magazine rack, often at a random mom & pop grocery store, made my heart leap.

Early on, I was too young to appreciate how much of Forry's personality informed FM, and fired my youthful love for all things fantastic. I knew he was editor, but had no idea how much of his personal hard work went into creating each issue of my favorite magazine. But I loved his goofy puns, his fancy signature at the bottom of the opening page, and his breathless enthusiasm for the icons of decades-old cinema. Imagine a 12-year-old of 2008 taking a fancy to the pop culture of 1973, and you get an idea of how unlikely Forry's accomplishment really was!

Within a few years, I had outgrown FM's target demo, and began seeking meatier horror and sci-fi content elsewhere. But nothing ever equalled the thrill of stumbling upon the newest issue of Forry's magazine. (In adulthood, my efforts to recapture that thrill with yellowing back issues have enriched many an eBay vendor.)

I'm sorry to say not until recently did it occur to me to reach out to Forry with a birthday card. I thank you Scarlet Street forum contributors for sparking the idea! Now that he is gone, I know there will never be another like him. I share the sorrow his friends and fans are feeling, and add my deepest felt condolences to those who knew him best.
