How else could one know which dvd release of NOSFERATU (1922) is the best one to see, or the process that Kino films went through to restore HANDS OF ORLAC (1924), or what happened when Bela Lugosi went to London in 1951? VHJ and Scarlet are literary time machines bringing much of the obscure, little known, or forgotten (but endlessly fascinating) - film past into the present - exactly where it belongs. I had forgotten that I had ordered a copy of the second issue so it was a great surprise to find it in my mailbox. I think the quality of writing is excellent and there's such a lot to read in each issue. I've written a few articles for Scary and for Monster Bash and reading the work in Scarlet inspires me to try writing some more in depth articles that might fit in there. They always used to have SCARLET STREET. I haven't been in since the store has, apparently, changed hands and has been remodeled (and BRIGHTENED), but I stopped in last night. There was #2!

I was shocked to walk in and find it rebuilt inside, glowing with flourescent light, and manned by one of Manhattan's many Far Eastern brethren.

I did like the articles and layout, just need to find some time to sit down and enjoy it. A major selling point for this issue is that this could be the final article written by Forrest J. Ackerman and if true, would make this a valuable collector's item. I look forward to issue 3.

It may not sound so good that I took so long to get through "Scarlet The Film Magazine" #2 but you must know I enjoyed it very much. To me it's like good food. When I like something I'll eat it fast but when I really like something, I go very slow! I just wanted to say that I am so happy you folks are working on this project. It's easy to see the tribute to Richard Valley's memory but, of course, with your own individuality shining through. Seeing Forry's last "Crimson Chronicles" was sure bitter-sweet. He's missed so much, but that goes without saying. I guess I appreciate most all the people who contribute to such a venture. The personalities are strong and I know that is what will continue to make "Scarlet" interesting, entertaining yet thought provoking reading. One thing I really like is there are no shortage of words! I enjoy very much the thorough research and expertise that goes into each article. One brief comment about issue #1: It's great to read up on Edgar Allan Poe. Knowing Curtis Harrington was a big fan of his work, before he died I was planning on revisiting some of it. This struck me personally as a nice little memory of Curtis, although of course it's in response to Poe's 200 birthday. There are always other connections made by individuals, for sure! As always I enjoy the themes you select for each issue. The Mummy is a favorite and it's good to see the uniqueness of that 1932 classic as compared to other efforts pointed out. All in all, keep it coming and with the variety you offer, being it the study of past and present fantasti-films, interviews and reviews (including the gem at the end excerpt from David Skal's new book with Jessica Rains about "Claude Rains: An Actor's Voice") I'm certain you can't go wrong. Speaking of the Skal book, it looks like another great one to read in full, but myself has (of course) again seen it here first in "Scarlet The Film Magazine". Keep on keepin' on!

Through it I also discovered my love for puns(much to thechagrin of those around me) and Forry's quiet stand against smoking and Viet Nam shaped my views as well. I have discovered a career as a writer and as an actor thanks to that quiet influence ,and it was an honor to work on magazines he contributed to, first SCARLET STREET and then ,SCARLET . Thanks to Forry ,I have made life long f(r)iends like Richard Valley , Joe Moe, Harry,John Dods, heck everyone involved with SCARLET, and it allows me to make new friends all over the world . Exploit Forry ? I am in his debt ! Part of me keeps hoping that Joe Moe or someone will come across some unpublished Forry tidbit we can use,but I would be happy if it finds print in some other publications as well . Thank you,John ,though, for the kind comments.

Those who would really appreciate his final work know that it was probably his final work, but reading it without pointing that out kinda made it all the more "Forry". I'm sure he'd want the show to go on, and here it did even as he moved on from his earthly existence. Grand job guys!!! Also, I realize I'd mentioned there's no shortage of words in Scarlet, and of course I meant that as a compliment. But I should have also pointed out there's no shortage of photos and illustrations. Personally I always see Christmas when I find a pix I hadn't seen before. Now I've seen a lot, surely not as many as you guys, but for me the opening inside poster (and lobby card is it?) from "The Invisible Man" paid the price of admission right there....and they were in color! Speaking of that, I do like the silvery gloss each page has in Scarlet. Good stuff. Highlights of other photos for me include one of the many Princess' reincarnations in "The Mummy", another of Karloff being 'dried out' I think, many of the Rains' pix's and the closing page of Hitchcock under an umbrella outside the Psycho set is a real hoot!

If you guys thought Forry made you feel you were "oK'- think for a moment about what he meant to a gal who lived and breathed horror- the pages of FM were always my safe haven. He also shaped my world-view... helped to make me the flaming liberal that I am. Veering off topic here, so I will now depart. But so happy that you enjoyed the latest issue. Back on topic! You say "Wicked" , like it's a bad thing.
