The Mean Girls star lost her beloved Hermes Birkin bag inside the terminal on Thursday afternoon when it was stolen from her trolley. The actress/singer was traveling through the airport with boyfriend Harry Morton on her way back to America from the Venice Film Festival when she noticed the bag, containing $954,000 worth of jewelry and her asthma medication, was missing. It is believed the bag was found in a car park at Heathrow by a member of the public, who contacted police. A police spokeswoman says, "We have not yet established what, if anything, is missing." I bet it would be nice to carry $954,000 worth of jewelry around in a purse, I'm guessing, is no bigger than the smallest cell phone on the market. Who carries that much money around with them in an airport? It's a shame the crook didn't get away with it. The little brat deserves some loss in her life.

Hecklers are never fun. Though damn if Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets aren't my favorite puppets ever.

One comedian mentioned how uncomfortable it made him to hear a white fan quote him. Difficult problem, because comedians naturally abhor censorship and don't want to be pressured into self-censorship. Inside humor, directed to the in-group, has always been a staple of stand-up. But there's also a question of social responsibility, if black comedians don't want to hear white fans copying their use of the n-word. Today there's really no such thing as a secluded niche where comics--or anybody else--can speak to a special audience and keep things "just between us." (Richardson couldn't get away with minimizing his diatribe because a fan caught it on cell phone video and distributed it on the Internet.)

When I was a kid, back in the 60'd you'd sometimes hear older folks (I lived in the mountain West---everyone was white) use the n-word. My parents who somehow grew up liberal despite their surroundings made it VERY clear to us that that word was a terrible thing to say. When I was a teacher in the 90's I heard, nice, polite, liberal white and black kids use the n-word all the time. We discussed it in a few classes and I always got the same answer. White kids used it because they heard black people--male singers, comedians, and athletes primarily--so they figured it was ok. Racism is probably as strong as it ever was, but I think the resurgence of this word has a different genesis. (I think, by the way, that gay culture's very similar use of the word "fag" is equally ill-advised.)

While we're on the subject of celebrity assholes, let's not neglect Alec Baldwin and his charming telephone call to his daughter. Her mother gets a special asshole award of her own for violating her daughter's privacy by giving that call to the media.

He just didn't show up for a script reading of the new season recently. Incredibly, CBS Paramount has let him go and wished him well - at the same time, saying that it was not related to creative differences or salary issues. Patinkin issued a statement saying "creative differences". But Patinkin's sudden, unexplained departure is shrouded in mystery as is CBS Paramount's decision to release him without legal action. Patinkin had signed a six-year contract with the show!
