Well, tomorrow (Friday) evening I am heading towards Louisville and WonderFest. John, the owner of Horrorbles, and I are going, along with another friend. It will be a bit of a whirlwind trip, but hopefully very fun.

It WAS fun! And I got to meet the delightful Elizabeth VF!
For me, the truly special shining moment in many was presenting John Zacherle with his Rondo award for Best CD. I'll never forget it! Max http://www.drunkenseveredhead.blogspot.com/

WonderFest certainly lives up to its name-- it was wonderful! I had a delightful, if all too short, weekend.
Firstly, I have to say-- Max, it was great to meet you! Within moments of meeting I felt completely at ease with yourself and your lovely wife. I don't think I've ever been accepted so quickly-- as soon as Max found out I was a Karloff fan, he pulled me out to his car to give me a spare copy of a book that would be of interest to me. (And it certainly has been-- thank you, Max!) Thank you, Max, for your enthusiastic and very warm welcome! There were so many delightful points... The dealer room, of course! Most of my purchases were books and copies of old magazines, but I did treat myself to a small (very small) King Kong & Ann figure and a Peter Cushing t-shirt-- and had a blast browsing, dreaming and admiring all the wonderful goodies! The models: as ever, they are really works of art. I never cease to be amazed at the creativity, ingenuity and phenomenal talent there is out there. The work exhibited at this event was truly stunning. It is really great that there is a venue like WonderFest where these talented artisans can exhibit their work. The Universal Monster Army display: this was my first time seeing the exhibit. I walked in and was totally blown away by the level of professionalism. My background from college was anthropology, with a heavy dose of museum studies, and I was so very impressed with the range of the exhibit, the different mediums used to communicate the message, and the construction. The people who put this together have to be some of the hardest working people in monster-biz, and my hat is off to them. My UMA buttons are now proudly tacked to my billboard, and I look forward to revisiting the exhibit, and its creators, at Monster Bash! The screening of the upcoming documentary AMERICAN SCARY, due out this fall-- a documentary about the history of horror hosts. I cannot wait to purchase my own copy! Meeting friends with whom I'd only communicated on line, as well as having the opportunity to meet Dr. Gangrene, Lori Nelson, Kenny Miller and the warm and dear Bob Burns. Finally, I have to say, for this Chicago girl, the highlight of my weekend-- meeting Zacherley. Never did I think I would have the opportunity to do that. Saturday, I was able to attend a panel discussion about Shock Theatre, of which he was a participant, and chat with him after. It was a delight to watch him receive his Rondo. I was thrilled to chat with him again on Sunday and buy personalized copies of his award-winning CD and the recently published biography-- as well as have my photo taken with him. I was completely swept off my feet-- and have notified my husband and Svengoolie that I will be leaving them both and running off to be a full-time Zacherley groupie. The weekend went by too quickly-- my only regrets are not having more time and being tired from our drive. (Well, that and not having hundreds of dollars to spend in the dealer room!) I am looking forward to attending in 2008! Meanwhile, it certainly has whetted my appetite for Monster Bash! |

NOTE: Originally this thread was Wonderfest 2007... I edited it to just be "WonderFest" so it could be dusted off from year to year.
WonderFest 2009 is upon us... well, almost upon us. Anyone here going? This year's theme-- ALIEN! They've got a theater rented in town for a screening! Ooooooo... The UMA exhibit is going to be there. Cortlandt Hull and Dennis Vincent are coming back this year, and will be sharing their new documentary on James Bama, which I am really looking forward to seeing. This morning I was sitting in charming Louisville, Kentucky, having breakfast with wonderful Joe Moe... at the table next to us Bob Burns was having his
morning repast.
Now I am back home. *sniff* It was a marvelous convention, and I had a terrific time! I can't say enough good stuff about WonderFest! They just do a wonderful job, and the Executive West Hotel and staff are so friendly and warm that it's always a pleasure to go back there. Excellent show, wonderful guests, saw old friends and got to meet some new ones... the models are, as ever, AMAZING. Even for someone like myself, who does not build, it's just stunning to see the work folks are doing. The UMA exhibit looked better than ever-- there was a lovely art tribute to the late Linda Meek, a tribute to Forry, and vintage toys, favors, masks and such. Wonderful show! |

Photos are up from this year's UMA exhibit (displayed at the WonderFest convention).
The photo thread at the UMA: Monsterkid Raymond Castile's photo link:

This year's exhibit included a tribute section for Linda "Meek" Miller, a member of the UMA who passed away very unexpectedly last year, leaving a gaping hole in the heart of the UMA. Meek was an accomplished artist, and the 2009 exhibit included a lovely display featuring reproductions of her stunning work. The upcoming issues of Scarlet magazine will include a special tribute to Meek. This year's display also included a tribute to fandom's favorite uncle, Forry Ackerman. The Uncle Forry tribute featured a wide range of wild, wacky and wonderful pieces from the collection of Robert Taylor and some very special highlight pieces from Joe Moe. It was great to bring a little slice of the Ackermansion to Louisville. |

Forry woulda' LOVED Wonderfest. Ah, well. Wonderfest LOVES Forry.
I'm glad Ack DID witness one of the first UMA displays at Monster Bash. He was impressed. All of fandom should take notice of the UMA and the work they do, not only to preserve our Monster heritage - but to SHARE everything they own with the rest of us. I was among many fans admiring the display over the Wonderfest weekend. But I was priveleged to be behind the scenes as the display was being set up. That experience gave me a deeper insight into just how passionate, serious and dedicated the UMA team really is. The collaborative spirit was amazing and the care and thought put into designing the display is dead serious. I can't wait to see its next incarnation! |
