SCARLET STREET INTERVIEWS |
Lead | |
|
I promised myself to sign on Scarlet Street and here I am with a question. Can someone tell me how many people were interviewed for Scarlet Street and the interviews ran in their lifetime and how many people died before the interview ran?

Happy to see you here, Steve! In answer to your question, the people we've interviewed who died before publication are:
Hurd Hatfield, Sheldon Leonard, Curt Siodmak, and Gene Evans. In the cases of Leonard and (I think) Siodmak, the issue containing the interviews were at the printer when the subjects died unexpectedly. We've also run a number of interviews with stars who died some years previous to the interviews being offered to us. The interviews were of interest and we saw no reason not to run them. In fact, unearthing "long-lost" interviews has become something of a cottage industry for some people and publications. For our part, these interviews include: Howard Duff, Gale Sondergaard, Joan Bennett, Basil Rathbone, Anne Baxter, and Keye Luke. In the case of Sondergaard, I conducted a portion of the interview myself back in the 1970s when I had the opportunity to work with the Spider Woman for a week. Interviews (some short and anecdotal, some quite lengthy) we've run with people who were alive at the time of publication: Christopher Lee, Harry Alan Towers, Ursula Andress, Christopher Atkins, Randal Kleiser, Irish McCalla, Joe Lara, Jeremy Brett, Edward Hardwicke, Vincent Price, Mark Hamill, Mitch Pileggi, Deborah Kerr, Roger Corman, Martin Stephens, Russ Tamblyn, Elizabeth Russell, David Wayne, Ida Lupino, Terry Kilburn, Bill Campbell, Jeffrey Combs, David Nelson, Aron Kincaid, Zacherley, Conrad Brooks, Sam Arkoff, Hazel Court, Richard Matheson, Robert Quarry, Charlton Heston, Peter Cushing, Beverly Garland, Jane Wyatt, Forrest J Ackerman, Ian Ogilvy, Ruth Hussey, Curtis Harrington, Carroll Borland, Phyllis Kirk, Noel Neill, Kay Linaker, Jack Larson, Ruth Roman, Bobby "Boris" Picket, Kevin Whately, Julie Adams, Ricou Browning, Ben Chapman, Lori Nelson, Tom Hennesy, Brett Halsey, John Bromfield, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Rutherford, Joel Schumacher, Johnny Duncan, Patricia Neal, Billy Gray, Robert Wise, David Burke, Rosalie Williams, Dame Jean Conan Doyle, Nickolas Grace, Daniel Massey, Denis Quilley, Patricia Hodge, Patrick Allen, Stefanie Powers, Simon Williams, Peter Wyngarde, John Landis, John Moulder-Brown, Veronica Carlson, Bob Hastings, Paul Williams, Shelley Winters, Ursula Pearson, Rebecca Staab, Jay Underwood, Val Guest, Michael Ripper, Johnny Sheffield, Hillary Brooke, Acquanetta, Jonathan Freeman, Brad Kane, Marcus D'Amico, Bob Kane, Robert Bloch, Ann Blyth, Barbara Shelley, Fay Wray, Lawrence Tierney, David Manners, Audrey Totter, Ian Richardson, Roddy McDowall, Stephen Geoffreys, Christopher Bram, Herman Cohen, Matt Frewer, Vincent Sherman, Dick Smith, Maury Chaykin, Bill Smitrovich, Colin Fox, Kari Matchett, Brad Pitt, Neil Jordan, Bill Condon, Chris Carter, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Doug Hutchison, Jerry Hardin, Darren McGavin, Jack Grinnage, Carol Ann Susi, John Fiedler, Al Feldstein, Vampira, Ann Doran, Dabbs Greer, Gary Conway, Jan Murray, Don Johnson, Michael Gough, Paul Picerni, John Semper, Stan Lee, Gray Morrow, Shane Briant, Robert Tinnell, Dennis Wayne, Roy Dean, Elizabeth Shepherd, Nina Foch, Jeff Rovin, Bert Coules, Gerard Christopher, Nicholas Lea, Marc Lawrence, Helmut Berger, Kathleen Freeman, Kasey Rogers, Anne Jeffreys, Robert Sterling, Thomas Beck, Kevin Conroy, Loren Lester, Richard Dempsey, Tommy Kirk, Tim Considine, Coleen Gray, Bruce Kimmel, William Marshall, John Neville, Adrienne Corri, Billy Zane, William B. Davis, Irving Gertz, Herman Stein, David Raksin, Lee Falk, John Michael Hayes, Patricia Hitchcock, Amana McBroom, Dean Hargrove, Barbara Hale, Patrick Macnee, Narcisco Ibanez Serrador, Joan Hickson, Yvette Vickers, George Baxt, Erika Remberg, Sidney Hayers, Gloria Stuart, John Agar, Victoria Price, Chris Costello, Bud Abbott Jr., Arthur Digman, Francis Lederer, Ray Stricklyn, Norma Eberhardt, Elena Verdugo, Jane Adams, Ian McKellen, and Clive Barker. Happily, many of these good folks are still with us. Not too shoddy a list, I'd venture, and the back issues are all available at www.scarletstreet.com . . . |

Thank you for the answer, Richard. I quote your post and the email you sent on the CHFB because Tom Weaver and his toadies hinted Scarlet Street keeps publishing interviews with people who died before publication. Of course, right away I was immediately accused of being you.

I'm sure that came as a great shock to you...

Can't have been a surprise; I told Steve in an email of the inevitable result of quoting my response. Mentioning one of my emails, according to the CHFB's increasingly delusional David Colton, reflects an amazing ability "to quote the SS editor's inner thoughts."
You know, there are actually some people on the CHFB who seem reasonable, sane, and pleasant and never take part in the mob submentality prevalent there. Several, in fact, have subscribed to Scarlet Street in the past couple of days. I don't know if they read these message boards, but if they do, I hope they're sign on and join in the discussions. As for the others, well, Iris Adrian said it best in HORROR ISLAND--"What a bunch of nitwits!" |

I really enjoy the interviews with stars of horror and sci-fi from the past. One actor who has impressed me for the sheer quantity of appearances he has made is Ed Nelson. This guy was in Twilight Zone, Thriller, Hitchcock, NIght Gallery, The Invaders, Outer Limits and tons of Sci-Fi movies. I was wondering if you guys had ever interviewed him? ******************************* "That's the way it crumbles, cookie-wise" |

Just looked over these forums and I cannot recall if we had ever interviewed the soon to be 80 year old (December 21) Nelson.
Some films of interest that he was in were early Corman films as Cry Baby Killers, A Bucket of Blood, Teenage Caveman and Attack of the Crab Monsters ,as well as the sci fi film The Brain Eaters. |

On the subject of interviews, we get more and more offers of availability for interviews and only a few people who are interested in doing them. Right now we
have the opportunity to interview Alan Cummings in relation to the DVD release of GHOST WRITER, for instance.
Would anyone interested in working on interviews for SCARLET please contact me. I'll admit it helps if you have some previous experience, but if you're interested, I'd like to discuss it. |

I have no experience with interviews, but with some guidance, I'd love to try. And I won't gush. I swear!
You say "Wicked" , like it's a bad thing.
