While waiting for a take-out order at my local mini-mall pizza/sub shop, I went next door to a Dollar Tree store and browsed around to kill some time. While there, I found a bin of various public domain(I assume) DVD titles for $1.00 each, including the infamous Lon Chaney Jr. episode of TALES OF TOMORROW. This is the one where Chaney had a snootfull and thought that he was still doing a rehearsal of FRANKENSTEIN, rather than the live broadcast. Though pretty effective as the monster, he picks up chairs to smash, but then carefully sets them back down again thinking that he's rehearsing. Since he is on stage until the next commercial break, no one has an opportunity to clue him in on the fact that the show was on-the-air live. After the break, Chaney has obviously been told and he really throws himself into the last scene, attacking the lab assistant, pulling an iron door off its hinges, and crashing through a glass window.

There are two other episodes on the disc(all from 1952), one featuring Thomas Mitchell, and another with a very young Leslie Nielsen and Brian Keith(billed as Robert Keith Jr.). A bargain at only a buck ("I'll buy THAT for a dollar!").

Other choices in the bin included a Jack Benny Show DVD which featured an hour long special from 1965 with Bob Hope, Elke Sommer (of course) and the Beach Boys! There's also Burns and Allen Shows, Ozzie & Harriet, Robin Hood with Richard Greene, Sherlock Holmes(50's TV show), Sgt. Preston, Milton Berle, plus lots of old and obscure cartoons, too(Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, Superman, Mighty Mouse, and many more). Video and audio quality varies from short to short, but for a buck who can complain.

Richard, I've got it! I went back today and they had one copy left, though everything else was in multiples. If you can't find it in your neck of the woods (suddenly I'm talking like Al Roper)...if you can't find it where you live, let me know and you can borrow my copy.

I haven't watched it yet, but I do see that Lon Chaney Jr. is one of the guests. Should be interesting.

I bought one of just about every DVD they had, including another Colgate Comedy Hour with Martin & Lewis. It's great to find these old gems available on DVD, especially at the bargain basement prices.
