I was in our local Walmart the other day and was happy to see that many Special Edition DVD's were starting to come down in price. I bought the Special Edition DVD of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN for only $9.44. Not just a great price, but a great DVD as well. The Mel Brooks audio commentary is like having Mel sitting there with you as you watch the movie. He comments on everything that flashes on the screen, even the credits. It was one of the best audio commentaries that I have ever heard. The rest of the DVD is packed with outtakes, deleted scenes, interviews, and a still-photo section with scores of behind-the-scenes snapshots. I particularly liked the photos of Kenneth Strickfadden tinkering with his original FRANKENSTEIN lab equipment. And all this for less than 10 bucks. Such a deal!

Thanks, Mark for starting this thread! I've been meaning to, but work and hospital visits have been keeping me away from the computer.
Anyway, for less than Ten Bucks each ($7.50 AND my cousin's ten percent employeee discount) I swiftly grabbed BATMAN, BATMAN RETURNS, BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN AND ROBIN. Also, found Speilberg's mega-comedy 1941 in the bins as well. We are just surrealist pilgrims; melting clocks in marble halls.

Okay, so I have 1941 - at least it's better than Ridely Scott's sequel: 1942: CONQUEST OF PARADISE.
And, 1941 has Dumbo, Robert Stack AND PATTI LUPONE! We are just surrealist pilgrims; melting clocks in marble halls.

At Walmart I also got the four Batman films for $7.50, plus the best Batman of all, the 1966 version (in which Adam West sums up his film career, "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!") in the bottomless $5.88 bin. From the same bin I also grabbed THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE TOWERING INFERNO, CREEPSHOW and THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS.
Also while at the place "where America shops" I was surprised to find the SECRETARY DVD in the new release section. Not something you would expect to see in a chain that's proposing to partially cover the front of certain women's magazines and which only sells the edited versions of CDs. |

Yeah, I picked that one up the other day as well. A very nice bargain DVD with plenty of features. The Adam West/Burt Ward commentaries are entertaining, if not very informative. The two aging super-heroes watch the movie with comments reminiscent of Chris Farley's "Remember when...??" character on SNL. "Hey Adam, remember when we did this scene?...Yeah.... That was great!" And that's about the extent of the commentaries. But it's still "great" to hear them laughing about the old days in tights. The movie looks "great" on DVD, as well. Well worth the six bucks. |

I took a chance and picked up John Carpenter's Prince Of Darkness dvd off of ebay for...$5.00.This is a Korean studio release in 2:35:1 with removable korean subs.It arrived today and the subs do come off and from sampling the chapter stops it doesn't look too bad.
The OOP US release commands big bucks. "Permit me to introduce myself. My name is Mabuse.Dr Mabuse".

Though the mention of the name may cause much wailing and gnashing of teeth from some persons here, there may be some folks who would actually like a heads-up on the fact that two John Boorman pictures -- ZARDOZ and WHERE THE HEART IS -- have found their way into the $6.99 bin at Best Buy.

Over at J&R near City Hall, I recently picked up De Palma's BODY DOUBLE for $6.99, and his BLOW OUT for $9.99.

I picked up three Retromedia deeveedees (HERCULES AND THE MOON MEN, THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST and SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE, the last with cover text by someone we all know and love) for $6.99 apiece at a local Borders. Did Retromedia go belly-up or something?

Grabbed Roman Polanski's THE TENANT for only $8.99 Canadian today. Haven't seen it before, but you can't beat that price. Looking forward to it as I am a big fan of a lot of Polanski's work.

I will be interested to hear what you think. I just got it too--I'm a Polanski fan--but found it disappointing. Beautifully shot and acted, but rather a dramatic letdown.

Since I have long contended that THE TENANT might just be Polanski's best film, I'll be curious to hear the response, too. (And dammit, I have yet to see this for sale!)

Kmart now has some Anchor Bay rejects for only 5.99! I picked up BLANK GENERATION, a Brigette Bardot movie, STUNTMAN and others. They had a few Hammer films like VENGEANCE OF SHE and PREHISTORIC WOMEN. Worth a look.
