BLOOD MONKEY (2007)

I picked this up expecting something in the 'so bad it's good' category (it's a regular on the Sci-Fi channel). Instead i found a reasonably effective, looow-budget jungle thriller. F. Murray Abraham plays a mad professor obsessed with capturing a recently discovered breed of ape. He lures a group of students to the jungle under the pretense of of a standard nature study. When in reality, he's thinking of them more as bait. We get the typical gaggle of students; jock, nerd, brooding guy, cute girl, tough girl etc. They slowly start to figure out all is not as it seems, and when one of them disappears without any notice, they start planning a revolt. There is one high-larious scene where the killer-apes pee on the tents and everyone thinks it's raining, but unfortunately it' the beginning of the end.
This was filmed in Thailand and has some really nice scenery. I think one of the main reasons this was so effective is that the killer-apes are only shown in very small snippets. More often than we actually see the apes, we see their POV, portrayed as red and hazy. There are a handful of gore scenes done old-school, and all of this worked very nicely for me. Although, much like CURSE OF THE DEMON, we are shown a money-shot at the end i could have lived without. This certainly won't be to everyones taste, but it was right up my alley.
