Just saw GHOSTS OF MARS! Great picture and sound, and all those who call the film a piece of crap are missing the point. It's the best of all possible worlds, Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube are two of the finest "bad" actors in cheap cinema; they get it "right" in the John Carpentry way only Kurt Russell ever seemed to understand. (am I using to many "quotes?") Great red and black color schemes, drugs, and some of the most fun fight scenes ever make this the best Carpenter movie since BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA), and what other movie dares have a flashback to an event that happened only minutes before? It captures the essence of Hawks' THE THING better than Carpenter's THE THING. Goofy commentary with Henstridge and Carpenter seals the deal.

Another plum: EXCALIBUR, which I bought for $9.99. Don't let the price fool you, the colors and transfer are excellent and its in widescreen.

I've also been catching the last 15 minutes of THE LOST WORLD every morning on TNT as I race around getting for work. It's pretty good with the sound almost completely off, and when you're only half paying attention. With sound, I cannot say.

Currently working on BUCKAROO BONZAI, but am really turned off by those creamy 1980's colors.

Yes, Ken, I just read some of the GHOSTS OF MARS file over in the NOW PLAYING Boards, so I know about your slight displeasure with the film. For me, huge gaps in logic, pointless flashbacks, same scene dissolves to speed things up, etc., were all part of the insane fun. In a way, it's almost as if Carpenter has never seen any movies except his own. What a nut! And those battle scenes, they are the exact battle scenes I WOULD have shot, back when was filming super 8mm action flicks as a 13 year old kid, had I the budget. In a way, I feel like the 13 year old kid in me made this movie, and never once even reread the script. There's something so lunkheadedly "instant" about it, as if anyone were to have thought twice about what they were doing, the whole thing would crash to the ground, of course it does anyway if you expect anything from it like a real movie, but as far as the thrill only great bad films can give, I have found my new champion.

Not to further antagonize you, but I thought MOULIN ROUGE annoying, especially Ewan MacGregor's self-involved character, who mistakes his own infanitle infatuation/obsession and artistic insecurity/will to fail for poetic love. Gimme a break, Ewan, you barely knew the girl and yet you're perfectly ready to kill her youself, the play and everything else because you can't control her every action? This is a story about art, life, , and above all, self-centered fear and desire.
