Needing to review some films for postings at my website I watched the following Edgar Wallace videos:The Mad Executioners and The Strangler Of Blackmoor Castle. Blackmoor Castle has to be my favorite of the krimis.Great atmosphere and a briskly paced plot.Executioners is a good film as well. Also reviewed for the site via vhs Theatre Of Death starring Chris Lee. Just for fun I watched two films picked up via trade that I had actually never seen before.The Japanese fantasy Atragon and Pete Walker's House Of The Long Shadows.Both were harmless fun. Dvd wise my questionable tastes popped up.I watched The Slime People and Reptilicus.At least I corrected the downward trend with Planet Of The Vampires. So what has been playing on your screen?

THE FURY GANDHI also I keep BBC America on when I'm not watching a dvd, either that or Turner Classic Movies. We are just surrealist pilgrims; melting clocks in marble halls.

These have been digitally restored by the Kirch group, and all feature their original soundtracks (in addition to German dubbed soundtracks). Among those released are the features OUR RELATIONS, BLOCKHEADS, A CHUMP AT OXFORD and a few short compilations. Also received this week - BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA, the complete CAPTAIN SCARLET (region 2, and not region 0 as originally announced)

Just picked up: REPTILICUS CURSE OF THE VAMPIRES (widescreen disc of rare Phillipino horror flick from late 60s) Western DVDs THE SHOOTING/RIDE THE WHIRLWIND (DVDs of Monte Hellman's strange, haunting mid 60s westerns starring Jack Nicholson) A FISTFUL OF LEAD fun spaghetti western w George Hilton at bargain basement 6 dollar price. Print is fairly fuzzy but watchable. VHS: DURA EL TRUGAR (1986) Jess Franco produced, Lina Romay directed hardcore narrated by a talking... well, it's scatological! Interesting to see a hardcore film directed and written by a woman.

Items that have recently been seen on my TV screen: Memento (excellent) The Usual Suspects (had been awhile since I'd seen it) Garden of Allah (posted about this in another thread) The Black Curtain (from Alfred Hitchcock Presents) Laura (taped off HBO a month or so ago, believe it or not) Manhunter (screwed up and didnt buy the DVD with the alternate TV ending...DOH!!!!) The Gift (rental DVD. Not bad but not a keeper. Greg Kinnear is pretty good and Katie Holmes does a wonderful nude scene, but alas, even those two weren't enough to warrant buying it) Michael

One Columbia two-fer and the other four Scimitar. The Scimitar discs look better than I expected. I also finally picked up THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN on DVD. "I don't normally make castle calls in the middle of the night, you know." Just thinking about it, I'm going to have to put it on for a bit tonight.

THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE and PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES. They're a great double bill one might call ROOTS OF ALIEN. PLANET comes off the best, looking better on DVD than one might remember from UHF TV, in a colorful widescreen print. IT! comes off worse, since thanks to the miracle of digital you can see every wrinkle of cloth in the cheap monster suit. Also, the image is pan & scan and looks horribly off center most of the time (unless it was originally just poorly framed.) Lots of old radio voices in the cast... but this definitely one that remains better remembered from a static-ridden UHF reception back in childhood, where it was one of the best. GOD, please give me the 1951 THING on DVD, amen. ---On deck: THE MIGHTY PEKING MAN, and MISTER VAMPIRE. More recent past: RED DESERT I VAMPIRE X-MEN Special Edition VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA And of course, lots of news, preferably the BBC and PBS variety, which seem much more open-eyed.

Just picked up some older Anchor Bay Hammer discs, like QUATERMASS AND THE PIT, PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES, and LOST CONTINENT...I wasn't willing to shell out the extortionate prices Anchor Bay was charging for them previously, but for ten bucks a shot, I had no such hesitation. (I've been seeing the newer AB Hammers for under twenty bucks each at Best Buy, a price I'm MUCH more in line with.) SCARS OF DRACULA, HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN, and BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB have all crept into the collection recently, as well. I've also fallen madly in love with THE RED SHOES, PEEPING TOM and BLACK NARCISSUS, on Criterion. Powell, Pressburger, and Cardiff might...just might be the Holy Trinity of British cinema. Gosh, these movies look swell on deeveedee! A few years ago, I saw BLACK NARCISSUS at a local revival house, and it didn't make a whole lotta sense to me...as it turns out, the print I saw was an edited American print missing some flashback sequences that made the motivations of Deborah Kerr's character a whole lot clearer. Also, some serials have been playing in the old Sony, a chapter at a time, every few days. Very much enjoyed THE PHANTOM, JUNGLE GIRL, and we're only two chapters away from the finale of BUCK ROGERS... What I'm NOT watching...the latest batch of Universal deeveedees. From the reviews (as well as the opinions expressed on the SCARLET STREET boards) I think I'll stick with the laserdiscs and the VHS tapes. Screw Universal. I'll spend my hard-earned sheckels on Anchor Bay and Criterion releases.

On DVD a couple of twin bills House and Haunted Hill and Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. House was the better looking of the two but neither looked too bad and it was only $3.00 at Sat. Matinee. Also just watched Horror Hotel and Carnival of Souls an entertaining disc for only $5.99. Supernatural perhaps bologna perhaps not. Bela Lugosi the Black Cat

First up Werewolf In A Girl's Dormitory.Considering it is a Madacy dvd the print was excellent.Especially when compared to Blood Creature which is also on the dvd.(That was a rather choppy affair). Werewolf had a few nice sets.I especially enjoyed the bridge over the stream set.But the movie really didn't strike me as being good or bad.Sort of dull. Quatermass II on the other hand was as enjoyable as always.I don't have any problems with Donlevy as Quatermass. As a bonus, Michael Ripper is still alive at the end of the movie!Great fun!

I'd heard that it was identical to the color-tinted Kino Video VHS that I already had, and that's true for the most part. However, the intertitles are greatly improved so far as consistency and readability. You get a choice of two musical scores, and the running commentary by Lokke Heiss is nicely detailed when he analyzes shots. It's a pretty good package.

Black Sabbath(American version):Nodded off.While I love Blood And Black Lace this is boring. Circus Of Fear:Edgar Wallace mayhem & murder at the circus.This is the full 89 minute version as opposed to the 74 Alpha version (or the 65 minute Psycho Circus). Friends Of Eddie Coyle:I loved the book and love the movie. AMC has the language cut up but until it gets the dvd treatment it will suffice.Mitchum is great. From DVD Mars Needs An Enema, I mean Mars Needs Women. Ghastly.Not funny not interesting.Just there.

Was this the color British version? the black-and-white GERMAN version (made from the same negative, but in B&W, and dubbed) is called "Das Ratsel des silbernen Dreiecks" (= The Secret of the Silver Triangle") and is interesting to watch. It's not an "alternate version" in the sense of the Spanish-language "Dracula"; apparently at the beginning it was simply a British film, NOT a copro; then the Germans acquired the rights to include them in their famous Edgar Wallace series; apparently they got a most complete inter-negative, so the editing and running time are different. The prints were made in b&w, and the "direction" is attributed to Werner Jacobs, without mention of John Llewellyn Moxey... It can make some confusion, as Chris Lee also made British/German coproductions REALLY shot (and spoken) in two versions, with some differences in the castings!
