One of my all-time favorite TV Westerns is out on DVD and I just received a box set of 20 episodes today: THE RIFLEMAN. It was a unique series in that the focus was on the relationship between a father and son: widower Lucas McCain (Chuck Conners) and his son, Mark (Johnny Crawford). I just watched the first episode, which featured Dennis Hopper and Sidney Blackmer, and the show holds up surprisingly well. There was also a surprise in the credits: this pilot episode was written by Sam Peckinpaw!

Posts: 1593 Mar 12 02 4:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Richard, when you mentioned "adult" westerns, THE RIFLEMAN wasn't what I had in mind. I thought you were going to talk about something like the infamous Lash Larue/Monica Gayle flick HARD ON THE TRAIL (aka HARD TRAIL, 1971).

The fourth episode of the series introduced the sheriff-to-be, played to perfection by Paul Fix. It was written AND directed by Sam Peckinpaw . . .

Posts: 250 Mar 13 02 2:16 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	For lovers of the old series, something called the Goodtimes network which I get on my digital cable out here in LA is now running on Saturday nights...Bronco Lane, Maverick, Cheyenne, and Sugarfoot, all in a block...what a kick! Cheyenne was always one of my favs and, having met Clint Walker (at Henry Wilcoxon's funeral) was a highlight for me. Nice man. On Friday night, this same station runs all the old Warner TV detective shows...Bourbon Street Beat, Sunset Strip, Hawaii Eye, and Surfside Six. As for the Lone Ranger, I also have a film package called STARZ that has a Western movie channel and runs the Lone Ranger every night and a lot of the old Hopalong Cassidy stuff. Also Gene Autry...who, sorry, just never did for me...a little too bald, paunchy, cherubic-cheeked ever give Roy Rogers a real run for his money. As for the Rifleman, Johnny Crawford now fronts a 1930's dance band that is really great. He conducts and sings. Nice light tenor.

Posts: 15102 Jul 18 02 4:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, it was a direct to video title , but a very fine western indeed was THE DESPERATE TRAIL ,starring SAM ELLIOT ,CRAIG SHEFFER,LINDA FIORENTINO, and FRANK WHALEY. Good story, well acted, and exciting set pieces , as Ellit tries to track down Linda, who gets caught up with robber Craig and his brother Frank .

Posts: 15102 Jul 19 02 9:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, I am on a streak... another great western LAST STAND AT SABER RIVER... based on an Elmer Leonard story, stars Tom Selleck (are he & Sam Elliot clones ??Both of them should do a western together) ,Suzy Amis, (a very young) Haley Joel Osment , Keith & David Carradine, and the late David Dukes ... a man returns from the Civil War,wanting to return to family life, and the difficulty he and his family have in adjusting . The family tensions are as important as the gun battles .....

Corral" story, and backed it up with some truly impresssive performances - Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer were particularly outstanding - but I was most interested in the introduction of two gay characters into the plotline - an in-town "cutie", who was played beautifully by Jason Priestley, and was often called "Sister-Boy" and a traveling actor by the name of Mr. Fabian (Billy Zane), who embarked on an affair with "Sister-Boy" - but it's also quite obvious to me that a lot of this storyline hit the cutting-room floor. There's an extraordinary scene in which "Sister-Boy" is attending the "theatrical presentation" of the traveling troupe for the first time - and a lot of the town toughs who are also attending show a very vocal appreciation of "Sister-Boy" - one of them even grabs for his ass and says, "Can I have some?" Jason Priestley and Billy Zane are really two gay lovers that simply can't be forgotten and maybe someday the obviously-cut scenes from their love story will be included in this film.

This was a wonderful show that always seemed to concentrate on human dignity, and one of the few shows that tried to show non-whites in a positive fashion. The Hallmark Channel shows it on Saturday afternoons along with Have Gun, Will Travel (another one of my favorites), Marshall Dillon, High Chapparal, and Rawhide.

This film is such an intense Western and focuses primarily on a very "inbred" type of family. Of course, the tracking of the cat is metaphorical - but I didn't really mind the metaphor.
