By which, if I recall correctly, we're talking about Westerns other than the Saturday morning fare of ROY ROGERS, THE LONE RANGER, and ANNIE OAKLEY offered kids in the fifties. One of my all-time favorite TV Westerns is out on DVD and I just received a box set of 20 episodes today: THE RIFLEMAN.
It was a unique series in that the focus was on the relationship between a father and son: widower Lucas McCain (Chuck Conners) and his son, Mark (Johnny Crawford). I just watched the first episode, which featured Dennis Hopper and Sidney Blackmer, and the show holds up surprisingly well. There was also a surprise in the credits: this pilot episode was written by Sam Peckinpaw!
