We can all point to films that at least had something of a decent story, a good director and cast, and just tanked. My in-famous example of this would be NORTH, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Elijah Woods, Jr. with an all-star cast. It was just HORRIBLE! - Mr. Len

I hope it's a little better than their VHS version, but even that was the best quality I've seen on the title. Alpha's DVD appears to be from a film source. Some chapter prints bear the "Universal Presents..." titles and others "Serials, Inc. Presents..." and the quality is better than I would normally expect. - Mr. Len

Although, Alpha had a nice print source for their release of MYSTERY MOUNTAIN and - Gad! - THE CLUTCHING HAND! Interesting in that Alpha is now listing on their website official studio releases (Columbia's BAT MAN for instance) and some of VCI's releases, too! I tried watching a few chapters of RAIDERS OF GHOST CITY from VCI's VHS version of a few years ago, but I never really got into it. Maybe I should give it another chance? - Mr. Len

If VCI can find one and do a great restoration job, "my hat's off to them"! Their version of THE MIRACLE RIDER was superb! They could have done a better restoration job on THE RETURN OF CHANDU, but the print source (35mm I'm told) was pretty good, mostly! - Mr. Len

Posts: 7251 Feb 11 08 1:53 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Serial Squadron version of TAILSPIN TOMMY AND THE GREAT AIR MYSTERY (c. 1935) is very, very good, as far as picture and sound quality go! The new VCI version of OVERLAND MAIL is also very good. Their print source seems to be from a distribution company called "United World Films." They were connected somehow with Universal or Universal's film rental company, which began around 1946 as Universal/16. The review of Alpha's THE CLUTCHING HAND in a recent VIDEO WATCHDOG review made it seem like it was a typical Alpha "run of the mill" print of a serial. I disagree! The print source for THE CLUTCHING HAND looked very good to me, and way above average for Alpha. I only wish the serial was a good one! It's pretty dull and dry for the most part - as far as I'm concerned! The Warner Home Video DVD versions of the two Columbia SUPERMAN serials is outstanding in terms of picture and sound quality - as you would probably expect. However, it looks as though the master material they used might have been the same for the older VHS version of SUPERMAN. The opening main titles are cut on most of the chapters except for the opening ones on each disc. Also, the character name and actor at the bottom of the opening credits has been cut off. This I would expect from another video distributor, but not Warners! I haven't looked at all the chapters for SUPERMAN VS. ATOM MAN but the ones I saw looked totally complete! Why didn't Warner Home Video do a better job with the first SUPERMAN serial? - This being said, the SUPERMAN Columbia serials somehow transcend the pinch-penny policies of producer Sam Katzman. These are the most entertaining - for me - of all his Columbia serials that I've seen so far! - Mr. Len

There are some titles they have, one called OFFICER 13 - I think - with a very young Mickey Rooney featured in the cast - that looks and sounds amazing good for such a rare early '30s film. Then there are some others that are just ... well, awful. THE APE MAN and the Tod Slaughter version of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET come to mind, particularly regarding sound quality. So, some of their source material is just awful and some sources they have access to is very, very good. It's a crap shoot. I mean, I'm eventually going to have to see LIFE RETURNS. It has the reputation of being a very poor quality film. Should I get the Alpha version or something more expensive? On the other hand, a cheaper Sam Katzman serial like BATMAN AND ROBIN looks and sounds fantastic from 35mm film and thus raises your feelings on what you've seen! So, it's a tough call! - Mr. Len

There are a number of films that I've re-evaluated after seeing a good print or after seeing in the correct aspect ratio. Not sure if LIFE RETURNS is one that would be improved but I'm told the Alpha version is at least servicable... The Mysterious Mr. Long
