I'm sure their are tons of Whovains in here, cause I want to gather them all up and talk about all that is WHO. I've been a fan of the show since I was 10, so I know a great deal about Doctor Who.

Posts: 15102 Sep 17 04 10:57 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been a fan off and on since I first saw PETER CUSHING's films (which many Whovians disown,as they do not follow the Doctor's origins,but are fun films)... then years later, seeing Jon Petwee when I was visiting Ireland , as well as the comics(which really captured his likeness) .... the Daleks still are the character I remember most from the show...

Posts: 3763 Oct 16 04 5:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm a HUGE fan of Doctor Who but was always handicapped by it never being on continually where I grew up. I got to learn about him on my famileis many trips to England when I was a kid. Now I get to watch it every night on BBC Kids Canada... Right now I'm in the last series of the Fourth Doctor and it seems to me that they must have got a HUGE budget increase because everything in this series seems much slicker and impressive from a production standpoint. For instance, when we go yarding nearly every Saturday morning, he starts the car and says, "Contact." I say, in a monotone, "Contact has been made." (Uh-oh, just let slip my no-life nerd credential, as if owning my own alto clarinet weren't bad enough.... )

Posts: 3763 Oct 19 04 2:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Curious as to what you guys think about the new Doctor Who starting up?? The new Doctor is the guy who played the Major in "28 Days Later" and after I saw that both my brother and I talked about how he would make a great Doctor Who. I believe it starts in March of '05 (or is it later?) but it also will play at the exact same time here in Canada on the CBC! I just cringe when I look on Doctor Who boards at all the fan boys who have written this show off and declared it crap before seeing even one frame of footage. Gregg Check out My DVD collection

Posts: 11180 Oct 22 04 9:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I used to see the uniquely eccentric DOCTOR WHO late at night when I would occasionally stay at a neighbor's house; the television in the bedroom only picked up broadcast channels, and this old PBS standby would invariably be the most interesting thing on. I liked all of the actors who starred as the title character - Tom Baker and GENESIS OF THE DALEKS being my favorite Doctor and episode, respectively. I saw one of Peter Cushing's filmic adventures as well; his Doctor was closer to William Hartnell's interpretation of an older, grandfatherly time-traveler than any other. :: Earl Roesel ::

One of the defining characteristics of the Doctor, and the source of his appeal for many - if not most - fans of the series, has always been his obvious nonconformity. While I don't wanna come to the new series with a prejudice, when I see the Doctor dressed in contemporary leather jacket (as above), and when I read a BBC publicity handout which says he will appear to be "just another man in the street", I do start to worry ...

The things I allow my self to read and see, seem to be okay by me. The way I look at it, is every re-generation of the Doctor has his own personality and maybe this one doesn't want to be like all the other Doctors with the wacky coats and bushy hair...... I'm sort of a fan but I've been watching re-runs recenly and it's very hard to recommend the shows past the Tom Baker era. At times it all looks so amateurish it's sort of embarassing. Some consider that to be part of its charm, but in its prime the show had good writing and a central character that made you overlook the poor SFX. I do feel certain that the new show will be better than at least the last 6 seasons. Despite his appearance (which I found to be quite amusing considering his taste in clothes and hairstyles in the past), I feel as long as he's written well and is a strong, eccentric character it will be good to see Dr. Who done in a way that looks as if it fits alongside quality SF on tv.

I'm currently watching them now on BBC Kids and the production values are certainly better than any other Doctor I've seen. Story highlights for me are "The Visitation", "Black Orchid" (I could see many Scarlet Streeters liking that one), "Mawdryn The Undead", "Terminus" "The Five Doctors", I could go on...... The Visitation is perhaps my favourite Davison story where I think everything clicked. I've seen some Patrick Troughton episodes and I've found them very enjoyable (I wish there were more available). I haven't seen enough of Hartnell to form an opinion but I like the idea of a crusty, curmudgeonly Doctor. Colin Baker was a nice attempt to get the character back to that of Tom Baker's era and I liked that they emphasised his pomposity- although the outfit was a huge mistake. Sylvester McCoy- well, I found he worked only when he was whimsical but he wasn't up to the task of switching to the dark, manipulative doctor that his season was heading for. But I think the problem with these later seasons was that they got too clever for their own good at times. What should have been a fun, sci-fi adventure show seemed, to me, to be writing for a different audience. But I think where Tom Baker was such a wildly eccentric performance there was a lot to enjoy even if the stories were below par. But I'm biased- I think the early Tom Baker stories with companions Sarah Jane and Harry Sullivan are Doctor Who in its prime.

It's been years, but I still remember a gem of an episode called Revelation of the Daleks. Touches of dark comedy, a cast of memorable grotesques (including one played by Clive Swift) and an uncharacteristically grim tone distinguished this one for me. :: Earl Roesel ::

From what I hear Colin Baker got the shaft from the fans at the time of his portrayal and has now, over time, come to be a little more loved. Gregg Check out My DVD collection

And Vengeance on Varos, a really nasty outing in which the Doctor finds himself in a maze filled with deadly traps; it all turns out to be televised entertainment for the planet. I remember a really good Sylvester McCoy episode called Ghost Light. It was sort of a Victorian haunted house thing, Gothic sci-fi. Love the Dr. Who DVDs, btw. Excellent (and often quite frank) commentary tracks!
