They were Satuday matinees where you could see IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE and THE RETURN OF DRACULA and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY. They were Coney Island and Palisades Park. They were the circus and the rodeo. They were television when it was fresh and new and different. They were rock 'n' roll. They were two-tone convertibles . . .

I certainly don't agree about the others, especially the remark about bad movies, since Wheeler and Woolsey were no longer making films . . .

We never ducked under our desks, though; we filed out of our classrooms and gathered in the school basement, where of course atomic bombs couldn't hurt us. Whenever I walk into town, I pass my elementary school and remember the "bomb shelter" signs that used to be posted in front of it . . .

Just as it's just an opinion that the movies tended to be overlit, overlong, and ugly to look at, but it is nonetheless mine.

My earliest memories have been flashes of infancy, and a few toddler flashbacks but for the most part, my more conscious memories begin around 1962. How about the song "Whatever happened to Randolph Scott?"... Was that not the Statler Brothers too, or was that just part of the song and it had another title?? I think that was the name of the song? AnyOne??

Posts: 524 Dec 29 02 7:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	... and I remember Ebbett's Field and Gil Hodges' bowling alley, where I met some of the Brooklyn Dodgers & got their autographs (which my Mom threw out when I went off to college). I remember Shock Theater on TV, and AIP & Hammer Films in the movies (local itch was the Peerless; I crossed up & over the streets via the steps up to the Myrtle Avenue "El"). The El itself is worth remembering. I remember nickel candy bars, 10 cent comic books, FM for 35 centavos, Yoo-Hoo with Yankee photos in the bottle-caps, real soda fountains, Elvis (before the army). I remember Bruco's movie still emporium in the Bronx, and Mark Ricci's Memory Shop (before he got high-falutin' & dealt only with "the trade") in lower Manhattan. I was just a kid, so McCarthyism & the Korean War & Ike & the more depressing things weren't on my plate. (Not that Ike was depressing; he was just THERE.) I remember LOTS of TV cowboy shows (on my family's 10-inch Sylvania), getting up at 5:00am to sit through "The Modern Farmer" before Crusader Rabbitt & Tom Terrific. (I was from Brooklyn; who the f--k knew what a tractor looked like?) I remember Zacherley & Wonderama (with Sonny Fox, then Chuck McCann, then Bob McAllister) & Office Joe Bolton (& the Three Stooges), & the Abbott & Costello TV Show, But, as the intro used to say, "Most of all, I remember Mama." <> Now, if I could only remember where I put my wallet...

I don't remember if this was in the late fifties or early sixties, but I remember driving by the Nike-Zeus site and watching those puppies pop out of the ground. I thought we were dead meat, but obviously it was a test. It was still rather terrifing and a vivid memory. But all in all the fifties was a great time for me, it was fairly safe for me and my friends, we could roam far and wide causing all sorts of mischief without getting into too much trouble. There was the drugstore with it's soda fountain where the soda was not pre-mixed, an old wooden-floored general store where I could get the latest comic books and every Friday night we would get together with my cousins and uncle, grab the blankets and go to the park for a band concert, which would always finish with the "Bunny-Hop" for the kids. Then on some Saturdays, we would go down to the dump and shoot rats. Ah, the good old days!

It's the era of ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN and SHE CREATURE, but also the era of 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD. It's the era of DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and FORBIDDEN PLANET, but also ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS and THE GIANT CLAW. It was THE BLOB and THE GIANT GILA MONSTER. X THE UNKNOWN (I think) and THE KILLER SHREWS. It was great toys like frogmen that swam around with baking soda in their flippers, and it was WeeGee squirt guns and 3-D horror comics, but it was also toys "made in Japan" that fell apart in a week and "full sized rocket ships!" for kids to play in, advertised in the backs of comic books, that turned out to be made of folded cardboard. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.

In most ways it seems the 50s were culturally an era which ended with the Kennedy assassination. Everything changed after it. Some things for better, some for worse.

Posts: 11398 Jun 12 07 9:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was born in 1956, and thus my memories of the '50s are pretty vague but I >do< have memories nonetheless, and the older I get the more I'm fascinated in trying to recall them, because it's now such a distant and historical looking epoch that I was a part of, like a living history museum for real! To me the '50s lasted through 1962, which I recall far better; everything from school decor, tv and whatever else was still deep '50s regardless of the latest trends. Heck, some of the '30s and '40s still seeped around the environment in ways that would vanish by the '70s. Being a small kid back then, I could've cared less about the prevailing politics and bad movies--what mattered was absorbing this world-as-I-found-it in a fresh, uncomplicated way. I guess the '64 World Fair was the transitional time (aside from obvious milestones such as JFK's assassination); both a farewell to '50s populuxe and related themes and attitudes as a mainstream showcase, and the advent of more accelerating times--though in retrospect I find it amusing how absolutely non-existent the concept of a personal computer was. Push-button phones yes, but some aspects of the future were just not envisioned! Anyway, I've now reached the point where I have half century old memories, which I find bittersweet in its distance and evolving changes.
