There evidently were other music libraries for films besides Mr. Meyer's (Sam Fox?) which were active prior to the AFM rulings in the late thirties. When was the theme from NOT used in PHANTOM EMPIRE??? I assume you're aware that any music, other than the credits & re-cap were added recently by Eric Stedman for his re-release of the serial. No, I was not aware of that (I disapprove most strongly, in fact), so it's immaterial where it was, since it wasn't at the beginning or end. I will watch the next chapter with a jaundiced ear!

Hell, I don't even approve of the business of replacing the track on CITY LIGHTS with an "exact" duplicate that supposedly benefits from modern recording techniques. (In fact, I can't stand to watch it because it sounds wrong.) It reminds me of when the folks at Disney decided to commemorate Stokowski -- by removing his track from FANTASIA and replacing it with a modern recording.

Posts: 5607 Jun 10 12 6:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	We-l-l-l-l-l-l-l, I don't believe that call reduces to an absolute. After all, this wasn't Murnau or Dieterle or Ford or....... It was Breezy & Otto Brower with Nat Levine producing & Aramand Schaeffer supervising. The reason there wasn't any music was definitely NOT an artistic decision. It was strictly economics. A lotta people now object to the Leroy Shield tracks added (after initial release) to some early Laurel & Hardy comedies in the late thirties. On the other hand, Stan wanted music in his pictures. And, if you've got a third hand, Leroy objected to the editors' seeming deaf ear towards the music they used & when they used it. And that objection was raised on the shorts that initially came out with music. For the most part, Eric has simply taken the limited music already utilized in the film & re-used it other places. Yes, he did augment with other music at times. Would they have been my choices? Probably not.... but I wasn't in charge. I try to keep an open mind.

Among other things, it doesn't sound in period with the films. I just don't think things ought to be dicked with after the fact -- especially this far after the fact, and even more when -- as in the case here -- I am unconvinced that it isn't in part a maneuver to claim ownership. By the bye, the NIGHT OF TERROR music crops up again...about 12 minutes in.
