Tripod, how was your night with Cary, Eva-Marie, James and Martin?

And "North By Northwest" is ever-fresh - I can't believe that the film is actually 50 years old.

What was James Mason's line to Martin Landau -"Why, Leonard, I do believe you're jealous." - Was that the line, Tripod? - and then he goes on to say that he's "flattered", right?

Tripod, "North by Northwest" has a very good score by Bernard Herrmann - Herrmann said that Hitchcock make 60% of their films and he made the remaining 40%. I doubt that Hitchcock was comfortable with that remark. And probably even resented it for a long, long time. But, when you think of "Psycho" and "Vertigo" and "Marnie" without Herrmann's music . . well, you can't really think of them without that haunting music, can you?

The studio wanted a hit song - and Herrmann didn't write hit songs.

Then, Tripod, I was misinformed.

Tripod, I think that you and I might both be right - according to Donald Spoto, in "The Dark Side of Genius", the executives at Universal weren't happy with Herrmann's score for "Marnie" and they did not want another symphonic score for "Torn Curtain", which they considered somewhat on the chilly side. When Hitchcock showed up for the recording of Herrmann's score, he immediately went off into a tirade, because he knew that the Universal executives weren't going to go for it. Later, Herrmann said that Hitchcock wanted a pop tune and he wasn't going to write one. He simply preferred to walk off and end a ten-year professional relationship. Within a short period of time, John Addison was hired and wrote his score for the film in one month. When he later called Hitchcock and played some of it over the phone, he said that he did feel that Hitchcock wasn't that interested.

A pop tune did come out of "Marnie" by the way - it was titled "Marnie" and sung by Nat King Cole - but nobody seems to remember it. On the "Marnie" thread, the News Hound provided us with a link to the song. There's an attempt at a pop tune in "Rear Window" - "Lisa" - but this tune didn't take off, either. Of course, there was a very famous pop tune in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" - "Que Sera, Sera" - which, by the way, Doris Day didn't want to record, saying that the song was silly.

We're learning a lot together, I'd say. I'm really enjoying all this posting.

By the way, Tripod, do you know anything about Bernard Herrmann THE MAN? I don't know much myself. I've heard that he was a difficult man.

When he walked out on Hitchcock, he told Hitch that he (Herrmann) had had a career BEFORE Hitchcock and that he would have a career AFTER Hitchcock.
