I only got round to taking some pics over the weekend.

Well, you know, I have been rather busy with other matters the past 4 weeks.

Sorry to hear about Tigger, Harry. Lovely photos of the menagerie! Shadow Cat has had a setback. She threw up everything she ate yesterday and isn't eating
(yet?) today, though she's still active and seems reasonably comfortable. I'm afraid the decision won't be obvious until we've obviously waited
too long.

Well, there was that little problem with the entire issue.

Oh, damn, Lelia. I know all about grappling with some terrible choices.
Everything being equal (and at these times NOTHING is equal ) I try to err on the side of waiting. You can always help them cross tomorrow. You can't take it back.

I do hope this is only a temporary set-back, Lelia.

Sorry to report that Shadow Cat has become shadow at age 21. Although the steroids gave her a temporary lift over the weekend, her digestive system completely
shut down. By yesterday, she was obviously suffering. From the way things developed over the past week, the vets decided that she did have a rapidly-spreading
cancer. There was no more they could do except give her a quiet, painless death. At the end, she lay quietly and wrapped her paw around my arm as I petted her.
This is the first time since 1971 that we've been without a cat. We won't rush right out to adopt. Shadow Cat was an amazing critter, a true member of the family, such a hard act to follow that I wouldn't wish that on a kitten right now, even if Kevin and I were ready to move on -- which we're definitely not. |

I'm so sorry Lelia.
There are paw prints on your heart that will be Shadow Cat's forever. When you and Kevin are ready to open your hearts and home to a new kitty, Shadow Cat will have a paw in it, somehow. She just will. My deepest sympathy to you both.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts. It's strange around here. First thing this morning I automatically went into the kitchen to feed her.

My condolences, Leila. Hard to imagine the impact of losing a beloved cat after 21 years! |

Tough week around here. June 30th of last year we had to put Bubba to sleep. Five years ago today we had to have Alex put to sleep.
And yesterday one of our elderly friends had to have her beloved dog Joe put to sleep after 11 years. He had fallen thursday night and could not get back up. After the phone call we went over and tried to get him on his feet. He was a big dog (100+lbs) and we couldn't move him to save his life. We tried putting whatever we could lay our hands on under him thinking that the wood flooring was too slick for him. Didn't work. His hip and leg were too far gone for him to put any weight on it. He never snapped at us trying to move him but he let us know it was very painful. He gave me that look I've become all too familiar with over the years and I knew that would be the last time we'd see him alive.

Evilkippy, that's a rough anniversary, and I'm also sorry about the neighbors' big dog. That's such a difficult decision to make, but sometimes
keeping a pet technically alive would be cruel, when the quality of life is gone.

True, but it can be damn hard to let go ... |

>> Yes. It's so difficult to know whether an illness is something an animal can survive with a decent life afterwards or whether a long, painful treatment only means prolonging an old friend's death. |

I know that...my sister's cat, Simba, seemed in ill health, and she was getting ready to call the vet (he's 16 years old), but suddenly he rallied and
is as active and bouncy as ever. She's not sure if he needs looking over or what. But we'll see. I have a fond memory of visiting her place, and Sim
sitting beside me, and just sitting with my hand buried in his fur (he's an orange-and-white longhair, very poofy), and him purring constantly.
Visiting the 'rents this weekend, I got re-acquainted with Lobo. Kind of. He acted like he was afraid of me and wouldn't let me near him. We thought he'd just adjust but he never seemed to, and grew warier and warier every day (except for a while on Saturday, when he came to the door when I walked in, as if happy to see me). Our best guess was that he's jealous of me, that I'm getting all the attention that he normally gets. Mom says he's got a temper and gets in snits when he doesn't get his way, and has been rather standoffish lately as well. Anyway, I managed to get a few good snaps...

Kitties can be moody.
I'd noticed that Maggie has been being litle low-key & stand-offish. I attribute this to the arrival of Bullwinkel, though they've become pals, but that doesn't mean she doesn't think he's stolen her spotlight. I've been making it a point the last week ro so to give her extra attention & she seems to be getting back to her old self. |
