I saw it twice and I couldn't forget it - the Paramount pre-coder, "Search for Beauty", with Buster Crabbe and Ida Lupino - they were involved in establishing a heath magazine, which, unbeknowst to them, was actually a front for a high-class whorehouse - I remember thinking to myself both times - it cannot get any wilder than this one.

Back a couple of weeks ago when we were discussing CALL HER SAVAGE, I had made a search of the Fox Movie Channel web site to see if it was listed, came up empty. The other day, I woke up early to discover it was on and in progress. I wish I had spotted it earlier, or that the site had a more efficient search engine. Doing a day-by-day search of their sked, I've discovered that they don't list more than the next two weeks. I will keep an eye out for it though, this is one that is not to be missed.

Maybe out of the context of this thread, but the rarely screened Raoul Walsh film THE BOWERY is listed for March 1 at 6am. I've not seen this in 40 years, so I'm looking forward to that.

Clore, keep searching and watching, you cannot miss "Search for Beauty". But, at least, you did catch some of it on Fox Movie Channel.

Well,as we discussed, Search For Beauty comes out on DVD in April, so it's in my future.

The film on Fox was Call Her Savage, maybe I wasn't clear on that. But that's a must for you to see, and if I spot it on the schedule, I'll post it.

Clore, "Call Her Savage" was shown at the Film Forum in a Pre-Code Extravazana (NYC) about a year ago, but I didn't get to see it then although I had attended the previous Pre-Code Extravazana. And I was amazed at "The Story of Temple Drake" there with Miriam Hopkins and Jack LaRue, which was based on a novel by William Faulkner. The movie version was about a wealthy girl who was kidnapped and raped and learned to love it and didn't want to leave! The ending took place in a courtroom and ended a bit abruptly, though. Now, I think that the novel's actual title was "Sanctuary" and later turned into another movie with Lee Remick and Yves Montand. Still, since this novel was written by Faulkner, "The Story of Temple Drake" must've been quite different from its source material - unless, of course, it was an out-and-out potboiler that was written to make some money.

I've yet to see The Story of Temple Drake, but I do know that it was notorious in its day. Paramount originally assigned George Raft to the film and he was not about to play a gangster again, especially one who is also a rapist. But he additionally didn't want to make another film with Miriam Hopkins either. Despite studio publicity of the period, the two detested each other and literally came to blows on the set of Dancers In the Dark.

Jack LaRue was given a big build up, but when the film tanked, he rapidly fell down the cast lists.

Clore, interesting info, I can see George Raft in the Jack LaRue role. But the subject-matter is so "hot" that even the film treads "carefully".

Maybe Channel 13 here was treading lightly also. They once had the film listed to air on a Saturday night in the early 80s, but when I tuned in, it was replaced with City Streets. Not that I'm complaining, I had never seen that one either and Sylvia Sidney is one of my favorite 30s actresses.

I don't believe it's available - not legitimately anyway. The film does show up on the Fox Movie Channel once every few months. Usually when I've noticed it, it had already started.

Only between the hours of 6am and noon. Since they're limited to their own library, they've run some things which otherwise might not have seen the light of day. They don't have any other way of padding out their schedule than to reach way back. So, they use the early morning hours for the 30s and 40s stuff and I've gotten to see some things that previously I had only heard of, and in some cases, never heard of.

It's a "freebie" on Time-Warner digital, so it's not as if I'm paying extra for it. But I will admit that I was very annoyed when they backed out of their Charlie Chan fest a few years back. I've got some posts around here on that subject and I actually boycotted them for a while because of that. Charlie Chan is now vanquished, but they don't mind playing Zorro, the Gay Blade or Cisco Kid movies. Seems to be a double standard at work.

They also have a "Legacy" format where one of their execs, Tom Rothmann, comes on before and after to give details. But when it's a fairly recent film, such as the other night's The Brothers McMullen, they squeeze the end credits to the bottom eighth of the screen in order to highlight Rothmann. That annoys the hell out of me and it doesn't strike me as much of a respectful legacy.

I remember Tom Rothmann introducing us to "The Omen" and later bidding adieu to "The Omen" - and telling us all about the curse or curses of the film - my favorite story being that when the negative of the film was being sent back to Hollywood on a plane, the plane was suddenly struck by lightening and almost brought down.

There's a promo feature that they run between films that depicts the opening of the film Australia at the Ziegfeld in NYC. Rothmann is hyping it and says "this is the kind of epic that makes you think of John Huston with Giant and The African Queen."

Each time I see it, I yell back "you idiot, George Stevens made Giant."

By the way, did you see the recent Tom Rothmann promo that preceded "Phantom of the Paradise" and introduced us to one of the stars - and, now, his wife - Jessica Harper, who told us that she beat out Linda Ronstadt for the part?

I'll set the timer, just in case. I'm an insomniac, I have no regular sleeping schedule. I sleep two hours here, three hours there and that's often spaced by 48 hours of being awake.

I haven't seen that promo and didn't know that Rothmann was married to Jessica Harper. I have to give him credit then for good taste.

OK, first reminder today March 20.
Yesterday I was recording one of my favorite pre-code films, JEWEL ROBBERY on TCM. Wouldn't you know it, about half-way through, the TCM signal disappeared for a couple of minutes.
