A while later on, I heard that Gus Van Sant had optioned the story to make a film. This project has been put on hold, according to imdb.com.
Does anybody know more about this project?

GUS VAN SANT, ANG LEE & the GAY COWBOY FILM |
Lead | |

Several years ago I read a strange and interesting story in the New Yorker by Annie Proulx, called BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It's the tale of two 'straight' cowboys working together in some remote area who discover they are attracted to each other. They begin an intense affair and some dramatic events ensue.

I know absolutely nothing about it.
But I'm imagining it starring Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. In fact I think I'm going to imagine it for quite awhile... Excuse me. |

As far as I am aware this project is still on hold. According to the Van Sant biography, "Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures had the screen rights, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana were to coadapt the story, and Gus was announced to possibly direct the vehicle. The tale by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Proulx dealt with two bisexual cowboys who have an occasional but intense sexual relationship over a two-decade period. Sounds good to me...now if only they'd make the darn thing. |

Ben Affleck... play a challenging non-mainstream role?
(hysterical laughter) Affleck hasn't taken many chances with his career since he & Damon won the Oscar whereas Matt keeps finding quite unusual material. Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going back to my fantasy. Brad was just about to kneel down to remove Matt's boots... |

(hysterical laughter)> Let us not forget that it was in indie wonder Kevin Smith's films that Affleck first achieved real notoriety. |

He can't act.
I wasn't trying to 'cast' this movie, but go ahead you guys and have your fun. Mr Affleck would never be my choice in any case I recommend reading the story. It's short, and included in a published Proulx collection. *******************************

Yes & he did do DOGMA a little while ago. But most of his choices over the past several years reek of safe, mainstream leading man roles. The man obviously prefers pablum and stardom to acting challenges. |

His brother Casey is at least as attractive, if not cuter. Anybody know if he can act?
I have not yet seen GERRY *******************************

I'm seeing the Seattle premiere of Gerry next Tuesday night so I'll post my reaction afterwards. I haven't seen such polarized reviews for a film in a long, long time. For anyone living here in The Emerald City they are also screening Van Sant's rarely shown debut film Mala Noche, a perfect motion picture and great favorite of mine.
As for Casey, he's adorable but aside from bit parts in To Die For and Chasing Amy I really only know him from Good Will Hunting where he played one of Matt Damon's working class buddies. He was very good in that role but I may be a bit biased in favor of him as I think both Chasing Amy and Good Will Hunting two of the best films of the last ten years. |

Quote: I have thought long and hard about your above statement and how I should respond. I compiled several pages of notes and preformed exhaustive research on the internet and in my local Library to fully crystallize my argument against your assessment of Mr. Affleck, So here goes...... THAT'S BULLSHIT, HE CAN TOO ACT!!!!! |

I'm pretty much in the can't act column. He's a sometimes likable screen presence, though.
And I can't help it, but everything about this movie that isn't being made keeps reminding of the SOUTH PARK episode about movies at Sundance all being about "gay cowboys eating pudding." ("We're all out of pudding. What should we do?" "We could discuss our sexuality.") |

GERRY | ||

So, has anybody else seen Van Sant's new film Gerry yet? Saw the Seattle preview this evening with a rapt, attentive audience. I liked the film a lot (and some of the dismissive reviews the film has been getting are embarrasing) although whether I consider it a good or great film depends a lot on how I interpret the final scene on the salt bed. For a moment it appears as if Damon is strangling the Affleck character but the only thing that really makes sense is if he is consoling him.
It starts off rather like Rosencrantz and Guilderstern lost in the dessert with the comedic pairing of Casey Affleck and Matt Damon but soon descends into existential anxiousness as the two begin to realize that they may never find either water or their way out of the vast wasteland. Single shots last for minutes at a time such as one of the sun rising real-time as the two, badly dehydrated and barely conscious, shuffle across a vast salt bed to their fate. There must be no more than a page or two of dialogue in the entire film and I probably haven't seen such a non-verbal movie since Beau Travail. Like that film (which also maddened many people) Gerry isn't for everyone, but for those who appreciate it's qualities...you are in for one of the most memorable films of the year. Also, for fans of Matt Damon I should add that he has bulked his body weight back up again and looks amazing. |

lost in the desert that is, not dessert. That would be another film entirely.

Gus Van Sant has recently announced that he is no longer interested in narrative cinema.

Whatever that means...
All I can think of now is Van Sant busily counting his money and NOT directing the scene he's supposed to be directing in JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK with Ben Affleck commenting, "You're a true artist, Gus." |

Re: "Gerry" is only the beginning, Jerry. | ||

His new film, which is inspired by the Columbine tragedy, is supposedly quite a startling departure from conventional cinema - and the two young killers have a shower scene in which they begin to become interested in each other - and Van Sant is very worried that he may be sending out the wrong message with this particular scene.
Unfortunately, I could not bring myself to see "Gerry". |
