Plenty of people still complain about grain. And some Blu's filter way too much grain out, leaving an odd plastic look. I'm glad to hear Criterion didn't go that route with IoLS.

The problem with the Blu-ray, from one standpoint, is that I can get frame-grabs from it.

SiBurning just posted over at the CHFB that he does think that the Blu is better. Specifically, there is more detail in the dark scenes later on in the film. So if you have Blu capabilities, you may want to take that into consideration.

I didn't really expect it to be that much of an improvement. First of all, the elements are almost certainly not that great, but more, Paramount films from that era all have a kind of soft-focus glow to them,

It doesn't seem to be noticeably better than the print shown on TCM a few years back ('05 or '06). However, I'm very pleased to have an official release as it's a personal favorite.

Generally, reading is better--too few commentaries are truly scene specific to require the accompanying visual. But when Roger Corman, f'rinstance, discusses camera movement and color choices as you watch them onscreen, that's harder to put on...

If I've never seen the movie or if it's been a long time since I've seen it, then I always watch it first, without the commentary and without seeing any of the extras. I only watch with the commentary first if I'm very familiar with the movie.
