Much as I dislike the greater portion of things CGI, I've no great fondness for the Harryhausen stuff either. Unique? Sure, but it's not believable...

To me, it's not always clear if Harryhausen's sequences succeed in spite of the animation's
odd and unrealistic look, or because of it.

Stop-motion can be hypnotic - it's so curiously artificial,
. fantastic, and unreal - with a unique and arresting quality and an inherent
stiffness...

My Harryhausen thesis is that he is one of the most influential filmmakers in the last fifty years. It's hard to think of another mid-century filmmaker whose impact and and influence is as pervasive today as that of RH (Disney and Hitchcock also come to mind. Many of today's top filmmakers corroborate this idea (I am collecting these quotes for an article):
