Thank you for leading me to the rest of the excerpts from the interview of Pauline Page! There are so many questions I would love to have asked her had I been doing the interviewing. I think Nigel Bruce must have been a very loving Father! He died at 57 or 58 and so I assume it was sudden. Nothing I have found on the internet mentions that he had been in ill health that year. I found one photograph on the internet that is of he and his wife but none with family all together or at their Home....

I would assume one of Pauline's Children inherited the Manuscript...I would buy it in an instant if it were available. I wish just even more excerpts than this were available. I would love to know more of Nigel Bruce's thoughts of "golden Hollywood Actors and Actresses." I think he and his wife put up David Niven after he came back to the U.S. after serving in England during WWII and I would love to read that or even about Geoffrey Page his son-in-law who was a famous RAF...

If it resurfaces, I'd suggest Gary & Sue Svehla's Midnight Marquee Press as a logical home for it.

I hope that someone makes the effort to try and research where the manuscript is ....it would indeed be a shame if this glimpse into Bruce's life and Hollywood/Theatre past should be lost....

Yes that does ring true. However it's funny that he didn't stipulate in his Will that his Ashes should be buried or scattered in England.

I have just found out the sad news that Nigel Bruce's daughter, Pauline Page, is now deceased. So the location of the manuscript is now unknown.

I suspect that Nigel Bruce's family never offered it for publication. If that is the case that's a great shame. I hope that Richard Valley has (or will) get sight of the manuscript for his forthcoming book on the Rathbone/Bruce SH movies.

Thanks for the excerpts! I'm amazed the book hasn't been published, and curious about why, since a Bruce autobiography would surely find a market, given the huge popularity of the Holmes series. The quality of the writing looks publishable--better than average for a celebrity autobiography.

Unfortunately nobody has any plans to publish this. Mr Utechin got Pauline Page's permission to publish the parts relating to the Sherlock Holmes movies and radio shows in his journal, and that as far as he wants to take it. I think the only way that this would ever have a chance of publication now would be if a small publisher decided to take a chance with it. Maybe someone like Richard Valley?

I too would like to express my thanks to Pauline Page, Stuart Fanning and Nick Utechin for making the excerpts from Nigel Bruce's biography available to us. It made fascinating reading.

I also would like to ask if there is any possibility of getting this work published in the near future? Perhaps Mr. Utechin might know something about this?

According to Ian Wolfe (who worked with N.B. in a few films; most notably in the Universal, S.H. serie), he was a bit pompous and would only talk to the British members of the cast. I believe the late Harry Bartell went with the addive- If you haven't got anything good to say..., when it came to Nigel Bruce.

Yes, thank-you, stuartfanning, they did indeed make interesting reading. One wonders, though, who Bruce thought his enemies were, as he seems to have been, from his autobiography, one of those people who liked and got along with, everyone he ever met.

Thanks Stuart, I've really enjoyed reading these teasers from the autobiography. Such a pity it wasn't published.

My mother was a huge fan of Basil Rathbone - she and her mother would go to the cinema together to see all the SH movies (I suspect they both swooned over Mr R ).

The only copy of Nigel Bruce's Unpublished Autobiography is with his daughter Mrs Pauline Page who lives near Oxford. Nick Utechin interviewed Mrs Page who allowed him to publish extracts from the work in the Sherlock Holmes Journal, of which he is editor. The interview and extracts appeared in the Winter issue of 1998: Volume 19 Number 1. Mr Utechin has kindly agreed to allow me to make the extracts more widely available. I will therefore post some of these on this Forum as I feel sure they...
