Watching Peter McEnery in Walt Disney's 1966 film, "The Fighting Prince of Donegal", I wondered if he was under exclusive contract to Walt Disney. Just prior to this film, he had starred alongside Hayley Mills in Disney's successful attempt at Hitchcock Lite, "The Moon-Spinners".

In "The Fighting Prince of Donegal", he plays the title role with great mastery for a 26 year-old actor. He's also surrounded by a large cast of expert English...

Does anyone know if a new biography of Basil Rathbone is in the works? The only books out there seem to be Rathbone's own autobiography and Michael Druxman's Basil Rathbone: His Life and Films. A friend of mine in particular wants to know, as she is what I would have to call a Rathbone groupie :) and she wishes there were more substantial biographical and analytical material on his life and work. Only the second time I've started a new topic, but I think it's worth noting that August 4th will be Marie Dressler Day on TCM during their annual "Summer under the Stars". It's a good chance to catch some rare early talkies as well as a good day for Dressler fans. I just wish they would do whatever the hell they need to do so they could run Dressler's last film CHRISTOPHER BEAN one of these days! As far as I know, (and maybe the Borgo Kid knows otherwise???)...

Couldn't find a thread for him. Always underrated, he represents for me the best of forties cinema (perhaps partly because he was in several of the best films of that decade. Although he stayed around for several decades afterward, and it was always nice to see him in the likes of HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE and THE ABONIMABLE DR. PHIBES, it is really only in the forties that he had a chance to shine. My favorite Cotten films:

I was watching a video clip from "The Magnificent Seven" and I suddenly realized how really cool James Coburn and Yul Brenner were. And it's funny, even though I really don't like Westerns that much, I still think that "The Magnificent Seven" is truly magnificent, one of the greatest films of all time, which was only exceeded by its score, which was written by Elmer Bernstein.

Watching Freddie B in "Anna Karenina" recently - he played Greta Garbo's little son, Sergi - Freddie was just so simple and direct and so warm and loving - you could understand, even experience, Garbo's heartache at being forced to abandon him.

And I simply thought that a talented child had found himself in the right directorial hands - Clarence Brown's.

But, in "Captains Courageous" (1937), Freddie as Harvey Cheyne gives such a complex and riveting...
