This may be the strangest promotion yet.

Earlier this fall Microsoft announced that they were sponsoring a "Family Guy" variety special that was to be structured around the release of Windows 7. This partnership lasted just long enough for the program to be taped, whereupon Microsoft realized that Family Guy just might not be in what they considered "good taste." How they missed this in their market research is a bit of a mystery, but such is business....

It was exactly seventy-nine years ago today, on the 20th of October 1930, that Mr Holmes and Dr Watson made their very first appearance on the airwaves, in a version of The Speckled Band written by the great radio-drama pioneer Edith Meiser and starring William Gillette, no less. It's possible that Gillette's performance that day was heard by more people than had seen his Holmes in the entire three-decade life of his theatrical vehicle.

Well, no, that's not the actual title, but cheapo indie direct-to-DVD film makers The Asylum are currently shooting a Holmes and Watson flick which does involve a monster attack on the capital. They're on location in north Wales, and there are a few stills here. Note the cost-cutting exercise in the costume department, at least as far as JHW's jacket goes (which isn't far)......

Recently I caught an episode and liked it enough to seek out the rest of the series and watch it again, and this time round I found myself enjoying it far more. Harry Alan Towers, the producer responsible for the John Gielgud/Ralph Richardson radio series and the two Christopher Lee TV movies has died at the age of eighty-eight. There's a Variety obituary here and his impressive IMDB filmography is here.

Sherlock Holmes - The Musical

I am in the early stages of producing this musical. Interesting show. Leslie Bricusse seems to have done some research into the character.
Just wondering, does anyone know if it's ever been staged in the States?

It would be nice to talk to someone who has experience with the show.

This coming weekend (July 25-27) the Harvard Film Archive will be running a Holmes film series, including three of the Rathbone films along with the Cushing Hound, The Seven Percent Solution, They Might be Giants and the 1925 The Lost World with live musical accompaniment. This is going to be the cover for the graphic novel. It was inspired by Frederick Dorr Steele's illustration of William Gillette as Sherlock Holmes. The artwork I'm using for the back cover was inspired by an illustration for Vanity Fair by an artist named Spry.

I just read "The Hound of the Baskervilles" on my Iphone. What a pleasure. You can download various applications for Iphone - some are no charge (as was mine) which include collections of Conan Doyle. I was very surprised that the small Iphone screen was not the impediment that I expected it to be. The text scroll up at a speed the reader controls by the tilt of the phone. Conen Doyle on Iphone. Recommended.

The new release of the restoration/recreation of Albert Parker's 1922 film arrived in my mailbox on Friday, and I had the pleasure to watch it over the weekend.

There is much to recommend in this DVD. The transfer is vastly superior to the current copy of the film in DVR circulation. The image is, for the most part, stable and not jittery. Scratches and imperfections have been left intact, but the dark quality that rendered many scenes unwatchable is mostly gone. The titles...
