I have been in contact with Philip Waddilove, producer of WITCHFINDER GENERAL (aka CONQUEROR WORM). After MGM spent years and lots of dough on a pristine, restored new DVD transfer of the film, Waddilove was lead to believe that it was on Sony's October '06 schedule. Apparently, this is not the case and Sony has little interest. This is how Waddilove replied to me:

"I'm at a loss for words.
The Hair just re-examined this Corman produced directorial debut of Peter Bogdanovich. The Hair had forgotten how powerful and unique this film is. TARGETS is a dark examination of a darkening America. TARGETS is also clever and even funny at times. Boris Karloff turns in a lovely performance. karloff's comedic double-take at himself in the mirror is easily worth the cost of this already buget-priced DVD alone. His bitch-slapping at the film's finale is also powerful and poignant....

Considering it is paired with the equally terrific transfer of PREMATURE BURIAL make this a candidate for DVD of the year. It'ls go my vote, especially priced at 9.99!
Corman's color palette equals in subtlety and design that of the Italian master, Mario Bava. The blinding yellow, purples and crimsons here leave the retina both exhilarated and exhaunsted. Corman has never made a better shot and designed movie...

I saw this on the big screen when it was first released, and thought it was pretty damn entertaining; a bit of the old, a bit of the new, some damn fine acting (from John Hurt, Raul Julia, and Nick Brimble), and good special effects for the characteristically low Corman budget. I've finally gotten hold of the uncut Japanese laserdisc (apparently some gory bits were cut for the U.S. domestic release), and I'm really looking forward to watching it again...maybe tonight.
I would like to recommend this 1969 AIP release, now a gorgeous DVD from MGM. A fascinating mess of a film, but fun trash nontheless. The interview with Richard Matheson is especially interesting as he claims his original script was in the time tripping fashion of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, but that director Cy Endfield disregarded his structure. A beautiful 1/85:1 transfer makes this look as good as it did in the theatre. I know, I was there when it showed in our local "arthouse"...
